Jr. Beta Attends State Convention in Hampton

Eighteen members from the Hardin Reynolds Memorial School Junior Beta Club attended the 22nd Annual Virginia State Junior Beta Convention held in Hampton on February 13-14, 2018.  The theme this year was “Beta on my Mind.”  The members competed in Academic and Arts and Crafts competitions.

Kursten Hylton, club president introduced our club to those attending the convention on Tuesday evening while Caroline Haynes, Vice President presented the club banner which was created by Luke Cutchins and Kursten Hylton.

The students brought home eight awards. Luke Cutchins, Caitlyn Haynes, Kursten Hylton, and Mia Stowe placed first in Scrapbook with Mia Stowe presenting.  Christian Hylton who was unable to attend also helped create the scrapbook.  Caitlyn Haynes, Caroline Haynes, and Lauren Murphy placed third in Spotlight Your Club with their board being presented by Lauren Murphy; Caroline Haynes and Jadyn Pruitt placed first in T-Shirt with Jadyn Pruitt presenting. Mia Stowe placed second in Fiber Arts – Quilting; Columbia Haycraft placed second in Handmade Jewelry and Luke Cutchins placed third in Recycled Art.  The club also placed first in Trading Pin.  These students received invitations to the National Junior Beta Convention in Savannah, GA June 13-16.

Heather Edwards competed in Special Talent and advanced to the top 5.  She received a Golden Ticket as a Premier Performer.  She will have the opportunity to work with a choreographer.  She will perform at the opening ceremony and twice more during the convention. She will also perform in a Flash Mob in downtown Savannah.          

Students also competed in Academic competitions:  Nicole Torres-Seda – 6th grade Language Arts; Colin Campbell – 7th grade Math; Ethan Curry – 7th grade Science; and Payton Stovall in 7th grade Social Studies.  Our Robotics team consisted of Colin Campbell, Kali Craig, Ethan Curry, Caroline Haynes and Payton Stovall.

The following students also competed in Visual Arts & Crafts: Kursten Hylton - Black & White Photography; Kali Craig – Color Photography; Jadyn Pruitt – Digital Photography; Olivia Thomas – Painting; Colin Campbell – Pastels; Alainah Harbour – Sculpture; Remi Miller – Sketching; Austin Errichetti – Woodworking; and Lauren Murphy – Wreath.

Nine of our members who did not attend the convention helped with ideas at the beginning of the design stage on our team competitions.    They were: Heather Brim, Logan Brim, Emma Buchanan, Haley Cassell, Whitley Kruse, Angel Plaster, Parker Roop, Elizabeth Smith and Xavier Torres-Seda.

The students were accompanied by their principal Mr. Kirk Renegar and two of their sponsors, Stephanie Campbell and Sherry Hartman.
